The most sensible and measured response I've seen all morning to the bin Laden thing is this, from Eric Fidler on Twitter:

Remember on Sept 12, 2001, when you saw people in some places abroad celebrating death? Exactly. Don't be like that.

I roll my eyes at my country so often, but this just I am downright ashamed now. A sense of irony would do us well, but we apparently don't have one. Can someone get me away from these self-centered assholes, please?

Yeah. I don't dispute that he did terrible things. I don't even dispute that there are many people who are entitled to feel a profound sense of relief right now. But the thing I keep coming back to is, of all people, Leo McGarry:

We have laws, and they're difficult, and they have to be enforced, and it's right that they're enforced. But we do not strut, ever.

I'm sure I'm going to take a lot of crap for reposting that quote on FB, but jaysis, people, THINK about what you're saying and doing when you react that way, will you? Not dancing in the street doesn't mean you think he was a great guy; it means you know, going back to TWW, that there's a way to be a person.

This exactly. I'm stealing it from you. Watching the news this morning made me ill.

I was thinking exactly the same thing

This captures very well the mixed emotions that many are feeling. It is worth a read:

It is difficult to know what to do with so much happiness.
With sadness there is something to rub against,
a wound to tend with lotion and cloth.
When the world falls in around you, you have pieces to pick up, something to hold in your hands, like ticket stubs or change.

But happiness floats.
It doesn't need you to hold it down.
It doesn't need anything.
Happiness lands on the roof of the next house, singing, and disappears when it wants to.
You are happy either way.
Even the fact that you once lived in a peaceful tree house and now live over a quarry of noise and dust cannot make you unhappy.
Everything has a life of its own.,
it too could wake up filled with possibilities of coffee cake and ripe peaches,
and love even the floor which needs to be swept,
the soiled linens and scratched records.

Since there is no place large enough to contain so much happiness,
you shrug, you raise your hands, and it flows out of you into everything you touch. You are not responsible.

You take no credit, as the night sky takes no credit for the moon, but continues to hold it, and share it, and in that way, be known.
